"I believe that government is for the people and that as your public servant, we - and I mean we - must work closely together to make our communities and Prince George's County the best place to live ... a place our children will return to because of the great opportunities that we will offer to them."
~Ron Fisher
Public Safety
I have learned through years of experience with many different public safety organizations that the most effective partnership between police officers and the community, to keep us all safe, is for all of us to work together as proactive problem solvers rather than just report takers.
Our partnership is vital and helps ensure the safety of our communities and the officers that patrol them.
As a member of the Citizens Complaints Oversight Panel, I have contributed to the growing trend of County Police Officers receiving fewer citizen complaints and a higher standard of professionalism. When I am elected to the county council I will maintain my vigilance to ensure this level of quality policing is continued and expanded.
Our police are the most visible indicator of the public safety we enjoy in our communities. We also want to recognize our firefighters and paramedics for the lifesaving contributions they provide as well, and offer our help by volunteering our time and doing our part in our homes and businesses to assist them like making sure the batteries in our smoke detectors are current and having an emergency escape plan in a fire to protect our children and other family members.
As your county council member, I will use my expertise gained through the CCOP to promise that I will work toward building the size and positive effects that our public safety forces need to continue the drop in crime that has made all of our communities safer.
Education
Our children are our greatest asset. They are the future of District 9, Prince George's County and the State of Maryland. They are the future of our country and we want them to have the educational opportunities to compete on an international scale.
The Public Schools have made great improvements over the last six years and that has been the result of a tremendous amount of resources spent to improve facilities and increase teacher's pay. I will work with you to ensure that our school system progresses to greater levels, so that we are no longer near the bottom ... or in the middle ... but at the top levels of the State of Maryland and our country.
I have worked with many of our children through the county's Summer Youth Employment Program. I have hired many of them and they are all very bright; they demand challenges, so I know they will succeed. One of my former young employees is now a clerk at the United States Supreme Court. I will continue to hire our youth and find other employers to do the same. It's good for business and it's good for our children.
Economic Development | Jobs
Summer jobs for our children will teach them the discipline of the working world, but we need to ensure a growing and prosperous job market in Prince George's County so we can afford their educational needs and so that they can return to our county and afford to buy a home and raise their families.
This can only be accomplished through quality economic development. We should not be putting up strip malls that create minimum wage jobs and many times empty storefronts with few long term prospects. We should, instead, create mixed use developments with residential and commercial job centers together so we can live closer to where we work, play and shop.
We should be looking toward long term planning so our roads, our schools and our public safety agencies are not overburdened. But, we can't stifle or stop all development because we must expand the county's tax base so that we are not overburdened with the expense of paying for the services we have grown to expect.
