Last year's budget cut proposal for Metrobus service prompted large, vocal public hearings in the region. Although a reduction of about $3.5 Million was proposed, cuts were barely averted at the last minute due to a one-time supplemental funding arrangement whereby the County uses the WSTC tax to fund its $500K match with the state.

By mid-year, the WMATA FY 10 budget scenario became worse. WMATA staff prepared another more comprehensive list of rail and bus service reductions in December, prompting another vocal public hearing in March. Once again, these service cuts were narrowly averted by creative budget application and the imposition of a 10 cent temporary fare surcharge on bus and rail.

The County now faces a new proposal to cut bus services by $3.5 to $5 million, starting this July in the new Fiscal Year.

    Cuts Could Include:
      • Outright elimination of some routes.
      • Major restructuring of bus schedules.
      • Less frequent service.
      • Rail service reductions.
      • High ridership and critical commuter routes.

The Public Hearing Docket Outlines the Proposal:
      • The original bus fare increase from $1.25 to $1.50
      • Raise rail peak and off peak fares by approximately 15%
      • Would still need to cut $5M from rail and bus services.
      • Could eliminate service cuts by raising base bus fare to $1.60 & rail fares by about 21%.
      • Other options include a peak of the peak surcharge and increasing parking fees.

The Proposed County Bus Service Cuts Include:
      • Eliminating the B27, B29, B31, C12, C14, R3 routes.
      • The restructure of Greenbelt, Hyattsville and bi-county C2, C4 service.
      • Less frequent service on 18 lines or 25 routes.
