Recently an item came to mind from an article posted by EFF  Sextortion and Bitcoin

Interesting enough, FEAR is the item that we are seeing a lot of lately.  Folks, remember, fear is a driver in ratings, views, and exposure. It will drive anything to the top as we fear something could be real, fear that something is happening to someone and prey upon your empathetic heart. So you need to do the following if you receive an email like this.

I know, password, is your pass word. You may not know me and you’re most likely wondering why you are getting this e mail, correct?
In fact, I placed a malware on the adult vids (porn material) web-site and you know what, you visited this website to have fun (you know what I mean). While you were watching video clips, your internet browser initiated operating as a RDP (Remote Desktop) that has a keylogger which provided me access to your screen and also webcam. Immediately after that, my software program gathered your entire contacts from your Messenger, social networks, as well as email.

Stop – Breathe – Think – Delete

Now this is mostly likely the action for most people but remember that if something looks relavant to inforamtion that you think should not be public ? Then you need tomake changes to all your accounts, enable 2FA (Two factor Authentication) , and possibly ditch accounts or your surfing behavior.

Remember your computer is not setup for extreme tight security and some traces of information can be left behind.  If you are looking to dodge big brother or surf anonymously and use a machine that strictly not for business then TAILS might be for you.  Many distributions out there to help in surfing anonymously.  TAILS is one of those operating systems.

So remember, do not panic when you see these email scams, most do not have any credibility and are just waiting for you to panic and react. Thats when they win.

TIPS

  1.  Email sent from public email domain  @gmail @yahoo
  2. Domain name is misspelled
  3. Poorly written and bad grammar in the email
  4. Links don’t match the name of the link written
  5. Sense of urgency

Watch for the above items in an email, evaluate (think), if it applies to you and threat is real, then delete it and go on your merry way.
